Case Study – Biosensors
Research by CDT has resulted in the development of a new optical technique that can improve the sensitivity of lateral flow devices (LFDs). When incorporated into a reader, the innovative approach could enable more sensitive diagnostic testing in healthcare applications. Initial development work suggests that up to an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity should be possible, while also speeding up testing and reducing errors. The novel optical LFD reader effectively brings desktop accuracy and speed to portable diagnostic testers.
CDT’s patented dynamic two-colour optical reader technology uses novel optics and data analysis algorithms and can easily be integrated into typical LFD optical readers. A key innovation is the additional data provided by the second colour which can:
- correct for the local background
- improve assay lower limit of detection
- compensate for sample viscosity errors
- eliminate erroneous tests more quickly
- measure coloured samples
