Our History
Founded in 1992 at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, CDT pioneered Polymer OLED technology for displays and lighting. Now, as Sumitomo Chemical’s only Corporate Research centre outside of Japan, we focus on innovative technologies and advanced materials for a sustainable future. Our expanding research spans multiple scientific fields, and we are committed to bridging the gap between innovative early stage ideas and commercialisation.

The Sumitomo Spirit
The Sumitomo Chemical Group dates back to the “House of Sumitomo,” a business with a history spanning about 400 years. The fundamental principles the business was founded on are upheld as “The Sumitomo Spirit” to this day. This spirit permeates through CDT as a Sumitomo Chemical Group Company.
